Can You Play GTA 5 on PS5 with PS4 Disc?

can you play gta5 on ps5 with ps4 disc featured

GTA 5 needs no introduction. It was the game that actually defined the PS4 console generation – albeit it was originally released for PS3 with inferior graphics. So popular is this game, that it is impossible not to find players that still want to visit Los Santos on their shiny new PS5.

This begs the burning question “can you play GTA 5 on PS5 with PS4 Disc?”. This is the good old question about backward compatibility. Fortunately, the answer to the question is a resounding yes. You CAN play GTA 5 on a PS5 with your old PS4 disc?

The only catch here is that the PS4 GTA 5 version will not benefit from the improved graphics on a PS5. For that, you will need to get yourself the GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced version specifically designed to cater to PS5.

GTA 5 PS4 Disc is Forward Compatible with PS5

So as explained earlier, if you have a PS4 version of GTA 5, you should have no issues playing it on a PS4. You will NOT need to update it, although it would be better if you do, the PS4 disc should work right out of the box in PS5 even in offline mode.

It should be noted that the PS4 discs will ONLY work on PS5 if you have the Standard Edition. In other words, PS4 disc games will NOT work on PS5 Digital Edition.

Things to Expect When Play PS4 GTA 5 Disc on PS5

While the majority of the features will remain the same, there are a few important points you should take note of.

1. Crossplay Will Work ONLY with PS4 Players

One of the most important points to note with regards to playing PS4 GTA 5 disc on PS5 is that you will ONLY be able to play online with your PS4 friends!

If you want to play GTA 5 online with your PS5 friends, you will need to get the new PS5 version (GTA Online). In other words, the PS5 version of GTA 5 has no cross-gen support meaning your PS4 friends will NOT be able to play with you if you have a PS5’s GTA 5 version.

Even if you head over to the PS5 online store, you will see two versions of GTA 5:

  • The old PS4 versions (GTA 5 PS4 & PS5) – crossplay with PS4 players supported
  • GTA Online (PlayStation 5) / GTA 5 (Playstation 5) aka Expanded and Enhanced – crossplay with PS4 not supported.

Honestly speaking, this all seems like a bit of a cash grab. The PS5 enhanced version should have been a free upgrade and PS5’s version should have supported crossplay with PS4 out of the box. But it seems if you are a true GTA 5 fan, and if you have friends on both consoles, you will need to buy the same game twice for each console.

2. The Game will Load Super-Fast

The first thing you will notice when you fire up the PS4 GTA 5 disc is that the game would barely have any load screens. Due to the faster hardware on PS5, particularly the faster storage drive installed, the load screens on PS5 will be almost nonexistent.

3. The Same Graphics

You may expect that the PS4 GTA 5 disc on PS5 will have improved graphics, but that is hardly the case. The graphics will remain the same.

To get better graphics, you will need to buy the GTA 5 Expanded and Enhanced version – but is that really worth it. Sure, the graphics enhancements are great, but do you really need them especially if you already have a PS4 disc lying around?

Would PS4 GTA 5 Disk Work on 4k or 120Hz on PS5?

One of the burning questions that many PS4 GTA 5 players migrating to PS5 have is whether their old PS4 disc will be able to play at 4K or 120Hz (120FPS) on PS5.

Unfortunately, the answer to that question is no. Like on PS4, the same disc on PS5 will have the gameplay capped at 1080 @ 30FPS.

In order to play GTA on 60 FPS or 4K resolution, again, you will need to get the new PS5 version of the game. The PS5 version gives you the option to enable 60FPS or 4K resolution.

Unfortunately, 120FPS is not supported even by the newer version specifically designed for PS5.
