Can Xbox Series X Work on 1080P TV?

Can Xbox Series X Work on 1080P TV featured

Xbox Series X belongs to the 9th generation of gaming consoles which are actually designed to take advantage of higher resolution displays such as 4K and QHD.

However, if you are on the edge about whether to buy a 4K TV for your Xbox Series X and if you want to stick with your old FHD TV, then you may ask “can Xbox Series X work on 1080P TV?”

The short and simple answer is yes. Xbox Series X CAN works with a 1080P TV perfectly fine. This is because, among the list of display modes supported by this console, 1080P happens to be one.

This will make more sense as I expand on this topic below.

The Display Modes Supported by Xbox Series X

Xbox Series X can natively support a set of resolutions and refresh rates. These include the following:

  • 1080P at 30, 60 and 120Hz
  • QHD at 30, 60 and 120Hz
  • 4K at 30, 60 and 120Hz

It should be noted that Xbox Series X is quite stringent in terms of the display modes it supports. In other words, 8K resolution, 16:10 resolution such as 1920×1200, or refresh rates higher than 120Hz will NOT be supported.

But the point to note here is that Xbox Series X has NATIVE support for 1080P. Native support means that Xobx Series X neither downscales nor upscales content to 1080P. It can ACTUALLY render 1080P frames for almost all games released for this console.

So Can Xbox Series X Work on 1080P TV?

The answer is a resounding yes. You can easily hook up your Xbox Series X to your old 1080P TV and it should work just fine.

However, it should be noted that if you have a 1080P TV or a monitor with a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz, then you cannot expect to play games at 120 FPS.

While Xbox Series X DOES support 120FPS gaming modes on many games out there, in order to support such a high frame rate, you need to have a TV or a monitor with a 120Hz refresh rate in the first place.

As such a TV with a 1080P @ 60Hz will ONLY work at a maximum frame rate of 60 FPS.

This leads us to another question:

Is 1080P TV Worth It for Xbox Series X?

So it is established that 1080P TVs CAN work with Xbox Series X. The next burning question is whether this resolution is worth it, particularly given the fact that QHD and 4K resolutions are becoming the next norm.

While 4K and QHD TVs or monitors are absolutely stunning in terms of displaying crisp visuals, 1080P TVs are still absolutely worth it especially if you do not have the budget to get a new 4K TV for yourself.

And here are the reasons why:

1. Graphics Quality is NOT Just About Resolution

If you have ever used a gaming PC and particularly if you have ever gone over the graphics settings on a PC game, you will realize that graphics are NOT just about the resolution.

There is so much more like texture details, shaders, lighting details, particles, effects, etc all of which contribute to the graphical fidelity of the game.

The resolution just happens to be ONE part of the overall graphical package.

Think of it this way, if a game is playing at 4K resolution, but the graphics engine and quality is bad, then no matter how high the resolution is, your visual experience will be horrible.

Now high-quality graphics and graphics engines require more powerful hardware. Xbox Series X happens to be significantly more powerful than its predecessors.

Hence, even at 1080P, the graphics quality of the games you get to experience on the Xbox Series X will be far better as compared to those on the previous consoles.

2. You Get To Benefit from the Better Hardware

So graphics aside, Xbox Series X will still ensure that the performance, load times, and frame rates are great thanks to the advanced CPU, Gen 4 SSD storage, and other goodies it harbors.

If the previous consoles had a hard time maintaining 30 FPS on 1080P, Xbox Series X will be able to handle 60 FPS on a 1080P easily, and if you happen to have a 1080P @ 120Hz TV, then you will get to experience the smoothness of 120 FPS gaming on many gaming titles.

When it comes to load times, you will be able to experience the fastest load times ever regardless of whether you are on a 1080P TV or not.

So the point here is that if you are upgrading from a previous-gen console, you will find Xbox Series X to be still highly worth it.
