There are few fortunate games on PS5 that can support 120 FPS gaming and COD: Warzone is one of them. However, in order to enable 120 FPS for this game, you need to have the right tools as well as the right settings.
120 FPS gaming not only adds to the smoothness of the motion and clarity, it is also an important aspect for professional gamers, particularly for those who play FPS.
A smoother crosshair motion, for instance, would enable you to lock on to your target much more effectively, especially in fast-paced scenarios.
In the following article, I will talk in detail about how to get 120 FPS on PS5 Warzone and what tools you need.
Display Modes Supported by COD: Warzone on PS5
120 FPS on Warzone is supported at only two resolutions: FHD and 1440P. The following is the list of all the display modes COD: Warzone supports:
- 1080 @ 60 or 120 FPS
- 1440P @ 60 or 120 FPS
- 4K @ 60 FPS
As such, it should be noted that at 4K resolution, Warzone will NOT support 120 FPS gaming.
And of course, you need to have the right monitor (and the right HDMI port/cable) in order to support a certain resolution and frame rate.
Tools Needed for 120 FPS Warzone Gaming on PS5
In order for 120 FPS gaming mode to work on Warzone, you need to have the right tools. Once you have these tools, we can then dabble into the settings for enabling 120 FPS.
You need to have:
- A Monitor with 120Hz Refresh Rate
- An HDMI cable capable of supporting 120Hz Refresh Rate at the required resolution.
1. Monitor with 120Hz Refresh Rate
In order to support 120FPS gaming mode on Warzone, you need to have a monitor that is rated at 120Hz refresh rate in the first place.
Meaning if you have the average monitor with a 60Hz refresh rate, then 120 FPS gaming mode on Warzone will simply not work.
Again, looking at the display modes supported above, you can have FHD @ 120Hz refresh rate or 1440P @ 120Hz refresh rate monitors.
If you have a 4K monitor with 120Hz, its resolution will be capped at 1440P in 120FPS mode.
Also, it should be noted that any other refresh rate i.e. 144Hz, 165Hz, or beyond will simply not be supported.
If you have a 144, 165 or 240Hz refresh rate monitor, you will need to make sure that it has the 120Hz display mode in order for 120FPS to work on the monitor.
Take the following 144Hz Dell S2719DGF monitor, for instance:
The 144Hz monitor above DOES NOT support 120Hz refresh rate display mode and thus the PS5 will simply not be able to play Warzone on this monitor at 120FPS (the game will instead work at 60FPS mode).
2. The Right HDMI Cable
PS5 comes with the top-of-the-line Ultra HDMI cable (HDMI 2.1 cable). Hence, if you are using this cable for connectivity you should have no issues with supporting 120FPS gaming mode.
However, if you are planning on using a replacement HDMI cable, then you will need to make sure that you have the right cable. This is because while all HDMI cables look the same, they vary drastically in terms of how much bandwidth they can carry.
The following table explains the different HDMI cable versions.
HDMI Cable Certification | Supported Specs | Intended HDMI Port Version |
---|---|---|
Standard | 1080P @ 60Hz | 1.0-1.3 |
High Speed | FHD @ 144Hz QHD @ 60Hz 4K @ 30hz | 1.4 |
Premium High Speed | FHD @ 240Hz QHD @ 144Hz 4K @ 60Hz | 2.0 |
Ultra High Speed | FHD @ > 240Hz 1440P @ > 240Hz 4K @ 144Hz (240Hz with DSC) 8K @ 120Hz (DSC) 10K @ 120Hz (DSC) | 2.1 |
The key points to note are as follows:
- To Play Warzone at FHD @ 120 FPS, any HDMI cable would do just fine
- To Play Warzone at 1440P @ 120 FPS, you will need to have AT LEAST a Premium HDMI (HDMI 2.0 cable).
So How to Get 120 FPS on PS5 Warzone?
Once you have the right monitor and the HDMI cable, you will need to dabble into the settings to enable 120 FPS mode.
For starters, you will need to enable the 120 Hz display mode on PS5 (again this option will only work if you have a 120Hz monitor). To do this:
- Head over PS5’s Settings menu from the Dashboard
- Screen and Video
- Video Output
- Enable 120Hz Output
Next, you will need to enable the Performance mode in PS5. You see, games generally work on either quality or performance mode. Quality mode gives preference to higher resolution whereas performance mode gives preference to higher FPS.
To do this,
- Head over PS5’s Settings menu from the Dashboard
- Saved Data and Game/App Settings
- Game Presets
- Change Performance or Resolution Mode to PERFORMANCE MODE
This should enable 120FPS gaming for either 1080p or 1440P resolution for Warzone on PS5.
