do ps4 headsets work on ps5 featured

Headsets are obviously an essential accessory for gamers who want to communicate with their fellow virtual adventurers or simply enjoy an immersive gaming experience without waking up the entire household.

But of course, splurging on a PS5 and a fancy new 4K TV to go with can make your wallet feel like it has just run a marathon. In such cases, you may wonder if you can salvage your old PS4 headsets. So do PS4 headsets work on PS5?

The simple answer to this query is yes, you CAN use your PS4 headset with a PS5.

If you have a wired or wireless first-party Playstation 4 Gold or Platinum headset or a headset from a third-party brand such as Steel Series, Razer, Sony, etc, if it worked on PS4, it will work on PS5.

So whether you want to trash-talk your opponents in Call of Duty or coordinate with your raid team in Destiny, you can bring your trusty old PS4 headset along with you for PS5.

PS5 is Backward Compatible with PS4 Headsets

As mentioned earlier, PS4 wired and wireless headsets can work on PS5 without requiring any adapters or upgrades.

In other words, PS5 is backward compatible with MOST PS4 accessories.

3.5mm Jack on DualSense

The PS5 DualSense controller, like the one on the PS4 DualShock 4 controller, has a 3.5mm jack in the front for connecting your wired headsets for audio. It also has a built-in microphone.

Bluetooth Wireless Headsets

As for the Wireless headsets, they too should have no issues interfacing with the PS5.

This can bring a sigh of relief to those who either just love their old PS4 headset, or do not have the top dollar to dish out on the newer PS5 headset.

This means that you won’t have to break up with your beloved headset just because you’re moving on to a newer, shinier console. It’s like being allowed to bring your favorite childhood toy with you to college – a comforting piece of the past in a brave new world.

A Note on the Newer PS5 Headsets and PS5’s Audio Enhancements

PS5 is equipped with a superhero of sound – a custom 3D Audio Engine called Tempest.

3D Audio technology was experimented with on PS4 but was never really fully achieved on most games. PS5, however, changes that with 3D audio being the baseline standard for most games.

This powerful and innovative technology aims to deliver an immersive 3D audio experience that makes you feel like you’re right in the heart of the action.

Imagine being able to hear the faint rustle of leaves in the wind, the distant footsteps of an approaching enemy, or the gentle pitter-patter of raindrops all around you.

3D Audio is a step up from Surround Sound technology. Surround sound relates to the audio being simulated around you. 3D adds another dimension, the dimension of depth. With this technology, you can differentiate the sounds coming from above and below you.

The Headset Must Have Support for 3D Audio

In order for you to experience the beauty of 3D Audio, you NEED to have a headset that supports this technology.

Now the newer headsets, both first-party and third-party intended for PS5 do support this technology.

Take for instance the Sony PS5 Pulse 3D headset, this new official headset released with the PS5 offers 3D audio support.

PS4 Gold vs PS4 Platinum

Do PS4 headsets work on ps5

As far as the two official PS4 headsets go, both PS4 Gold and PS4 Platinum WILL WORK on PS5.

However, the PS4 Gold does NOT have support for 3D Audio technology, whereas, the PS4 Platinum does.

So, if you have a PS4 Gold, you may want to upgrade to PS5 Pulse 3D for a better quality experience. But if you have a PS4 Platinum, then there is no solid reason for you to upgrade.

The same is true if you have a third-party headset.

So Do PS4 Headsets Work on PS5?

The short and simple answer is yes, PS4 headsets, both wired and wireless WILL work on PS5.

However, whether the headset will support the 3D Audio technology or not depends upon the headset’s model.

If you do not have a headset at all, then it would be worthwhile to spend on a headset that DOES have support for 3D Audio technology for your next pair.
